Guide
Modern vs Traditional Nepali Names
Some parents want a name that feels classic and familiar. Others want something fresh. This guide shows what we mean by traditional and modern names, with real examples and tips for finding a balance.
What we mean by modern and traditional
These words can mean different things to different families, so here is how we use them on this site.
A modern name is one our editors have tagged as a contemporary choice, popular with recent generations. About 1,050 names in our list carry this tag.
A traditional name is one with Sanskrit or Nepali roots and a verified meaning. It is carried by at least 5 people in our sample of recorded names, and it is not tagged modern. About 970 names meet all of these tests.
Many names fit neither group, and that is fine. A name can be rare, or have roots elsewhere, and still be a lovely choice. Our methodology page explains how we count.
Classic names you know well
Traditional names often name a deity, a virtue or a part of nature directly. They are short and clear, and their meanings are widely known. Many of them are names of gods, which our guide to names from Hindu gods and goddesses covers in depth.
In our sample, the most common traditional boy names include Bibek (विवेक, wisdom, discernment), Santosh (सन्तोष, contentment) and Sagar (सागर, ocean). Common traditional girl names include Asmita (अस्मिता, self-respect), Manisha (मनिषा, wisdom) and Priyanka (प्रियंका, dear, beloved). Browse the traditional boy names and traditional girl names lists.
Contemporary choices
Modern names often have Sanskrit roots too. The difference is more in feel. They tend to carry gentler or more abstract meanings, such as horizon, gift, review or creation, and they often use sounds like ksh or a long aa at the start.
Among names tagged modern, the most common in our sample include Roshan (रोशन, bright, shining), Saugat and Kshitiz for boys, and Neha and Srijana for girls. Browse modern boy names and modern girl names.
- Kshitiz (क्षितिज): horizon, where the earth meets the sky.
- Saugat (सौगात): gift, something given with affection.
- Abhinav (अभिनव): new, fresh.
- Anmol (अनमोल): priceless.
- Neha (नेहा): love, affection.
- Srijana (सृजना): creation, a creative act.
- Samiksha (समीक्षा): careful review.
- Aarohi (आरोही): ascending; the rising scale in music.
- Ananya (अनन्या): unique, matchless.
Old roots, fresh feel
The line between the two is softer than it looks. Aayush (आयुष) means life or long life. It is an old Sanskrit word, yet it sounds fresh to many parents, and over 70 people carry it in our sample. It meets our traditional test even though it is not tagged modern.
Spelling can shift the feel too. The same name may be written Aayush or Ayush, or Deepika or Dipika. Our guide to spelling Nepali names in English helps you choose a form that suits you.
Short names
Short names cross the line between old and new. Classic names like Ram, Hari, Sita and Gita are short, and so are modern picks like Neha, Diya (दिया, lamp) and Riya (रिया). We list about 410 names of four letters or fewer that have a verified meaning.
Short names are easy to spell abroad and hard to shorten into a nickname you did not choose. See short Nepali names, split into short boy names and short girl names, or try the short names tool.
Unique names
If you want a name few other children share, look at our unique names. These have a verified meaning and are carried by at most one person in our sample. There are about 1,670 of them. Modern picks like Ananya, Aarohi and Aahana (आहाना, inner light) appear there.
Remember that rare in our sample does not mean no one else has the name. It means it is uncommon. The rarity tool shows how a name compares, and the unique boy names and unique girl names lists are a good place to browse. You can also see rare names and, for contrast, common names.
How to balance the two
You do not have to pick a side. Many families find a name that feels rooted and fresh at once. Here are a few ways to get there.
- Start with a meaning you love, then compare an old and a new name that share it. For light, Prakash is classic and Aahana is newer. Browse names by meaning.
- Honour a grandparent with a name from the same root or theme, rather than the same name.
- Check how common a name is on the popular names list. A very common name may mean three in one class.
- Hear it with your family name using the full name checker.
- Weigh two finalists side by side with the compare names tool.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a modern Nepali name?
On this site, a modern name is one our editors have tagged as a contemporary choice, popular with recent generations. Examples include Kshitiz, Saugat, Neha and Samiksha. See the full modern names list.
What counts as a traditional Nepali name?
A name with Sanskrit or Nepali roots and a verified meaning, carried by at least 5 people in our sample, and not tagged modern. Ram, Krishna, Sita and Sagar all qualify. See traditional names.
Can you show which names are rising or falling over time?
No. Our counts show how many people carry a name in our sample, not when they were born. So we do not publish year-by-year trends. The methodology page explains what the counts mean.
Are traditional names old-fashioned?
Not at all. Names like Aayush and Sagar are classic and still well loved. A traditional name gives a child a meaning many people already know.
How do I find a name that is both short and modern?
Look at Neha, Diya and Riya, or browse the short names list and the short names tool.
